Dear Members, Supporters and Friends.
I am indeed very proud and honoured to have been elected President of this great Club for the 2018/2019 season. I have had the most amazing year – being fortunate enough to represent the club I have called home for 36 years, as its President.
Although relegated to Division 1B last season, our hope was to return to Division 1A where we belong. We didn’t manage it this year but we did show everyone that although we are an exceptionally young team, we are not one to mess with, even leading Division 1B going into the Christmas break. Hopefully next season under the Presidency of Michael ‘Mick Flats’ O’Flaherty we can build on the foundations we laid down this season and make our way back to the Top Flight of Irish Rugby.
I wish every success to incoming President Mick Flats, to all his officers, both the Men’s and Women’s 1st Teams, all their coaches, managers and backroom staff in next season’s campaign.
To all our teams in the Metro Divisions, including our Under 20s, our Vets, Juniors, Youths, and Minis – your coaches, managers and everyone volunteering in these areas – I wish only the very best to you over the next season and I look forward to attending your many games, purely as a supporter, next season!
Special thanks to our main Club Sponsor Softco. Thanks to Jim Coffey and Susan Spence for their generosity and continued support throughout the season – your loyalty to us is hugely appreciated. And thanks also to all of our Club Sponsors, big and small, for all their support. Thank you to our advertisers – in the Yearbook and to those who advertise on the pitch-side hoardings, enter teams in our Golf Classic and much more – please do contact the office if you think you can help us out in any way!
Thanks to Joe Doddy for his support as Chairman this year, working closely with the Executive Committee. And thank you to all members of our Executive Committee this season and next.
A massive thank you to Club Administrator Marie Hammond for her hard work and continued support of me throughout my Presidency, making my job a lot less stressful. To the Bar Manager – Tony McGuinness, Elaine and all his staff; Grounds-man Pat Nash and Facilities Housekeeper Rio O’Toole – thank you. Thank you to all of our club members and guests to Templeville Road, who made my year so special.
Finally to my three sons, Jack, Harry and Max – thank you for all the support this year and for helping out in countless ways. Most importantly, thank you to my wife Lucia, who has put up with me throughout this season (and every season before). We celebrated 30 years of marriage this year and I couldn’t have made it through the year without her. Meetings, events, matches, dinners, functions, coach trips, and many late nights in Mary’s and other clubs – THANK YOU.
I look forward to returning to my role as ‘club member’, but I won’t be going anywhere – you’ll still see me at rugby matches of all levels, functions and fundraisers, and I’m greatly looking forward to supporting Mick and his officers throughout the upcoming season. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my year but it’s now time for Mick Flats to take the helm and steer the club.
I would like to make a small request that I made in my President’s welcome message this time last year – If you have spare time on your hands, why not volunteer to help at the Club? Make this your year to do so! Your club and your club-mates need you!
