Metro Division 10 League Final Preview
Monkstown F.C. v St. Mary’s College R.F.C.
Wanderers, Merrion Road – Saturday 23rd March 2019 15:00
When St. Mary’s travel to Merrion Road this Saturday to take on Monkstown in this year’s Division 10 final, it will be very familiar opponents they face. This will be the fourth match since last November between these sides. All their recent games have been very high scoring, with an average of fifty points per game. Monkstown winning the first league game at Templeville Road (34-17), while Mary’s followed up a with a win in the Cup (30-21) and later in the league both at Sydney Parade (26-21).
Division 10 has been fiercely competitive this season and the St. Mary’s side led by captain James Casey have built on last year’s Division 11 league win and promotion to finish the league phase in second place with some great results against Railway Union, Rathoath and of course Monkstown along the way.
St. Mary’s will need to rely on a strong defence to keep a free scoring Monkstown at bay. Monkstown possess a powerful backline and are highly proficient at transferring the point of attack and moving the ball out wide. St. Mary’s will be keen to tighten up their defence from their last league game against Coolmine, which they narrowly lost 38-36 and focus on limiting offensive opportunities for Monkstown. St. Mary’s will look to use strong direct rugby to make their mark on this game and know they will need to put in a very strong performance to win this final.
The team is calling on all club members, past and present players to get down to Merrion Road this Saturday and support the lads.
