St Mary’s Women Storm to Leinster League Victory

14 games in the league this season and a semi-final win have all culminated in Sunday’s fixture – the Leinster League final against Railway W2s, in Naas RFC. Having met Railway twice before in the league, winning the first match 26-0, and losing the second clash 10-5, there was everything to play for, and more.

Mary’s were dominant from the outset, playing territory and keeping Railway in their own 22 with the help of out-half- Sarah Duignan (Leinster’s Player of the Match.) Mary’s kept unrelenting pressure on the skilled Railway side, it was only a matter of time before Niamh Fitzgerald broke through the defence and crashed over the line with a try to the right of the posts. Shayne Richardson confidently slotted the conversion from in front, with the opening score 7-0.

After a very short turnaround, Paula Fitzpatrick’s immense carry got Mary’s over the line once again. Richardson took the kick, but unfortunately, it pulled slightly to the right, hitting the post.

Just before half-time, the girls in blue managed to put more points on the board. Aoife Moore, the captain, picked the ball from the base of a five-metre scrum, beating Railway’s back-row and number 10, to dot the ball down over the line. Shayne’s boot rang true down the middle, splitting the posts, leaving the score at 19-0 at halftime.

The second half got underway with Railway coming back fighting, making a number of line breaks, but were met with a solid wall of blue. Two penalties were awarded to Mary’s, on which they capitalized with Shayne patiently and confidently splitting the posts once again. Final score 25-0 to Mary’s.

The fight isn’t over yet for the St. Mary’s girls as they are now into the provincial qualifiers, playing for promotion to return back to AIL. We are always looking ahead, and always eager for new players to join – we cater for all levels of ability. Come and take part in our training sessions – 7:00pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.
